1/48th Scale Delta 727-200

This is my latest fluff project I built in Dallas. I found the elusive “3-D Paper” 727 card model on ebay in DAL colors and quickly snatched it up. In the early 80’s, this company produced a PSA 727-200 and a FedEx 727-100 as well and in the same scale (1/48th). I copied the original model at 1:1 scale on 11X17 card stock and used 2 mm depron bulkheads for its construction. Horizontal stab is 2mm depron and the wings are 9mm depron sanded to shape. The innards are from the Parkzone Mini Stryker running on an $8.00 240 mah 2 cell pack. It weighs 143 grams RTF and flies like a cloud. The gym in the video is a bit tight for this model but manageable. Really fun model and surprisingly docile for having such a highly swept wing.—-Mike

Aeromozas Mexicanas

This is from a fundraiser last year for the now unemployed stewardesses of Mexicana Airlines. They published a calendar for 2011.  Beautiful gals, one and all. I really want to get one of the ASPA baseball hats all the pilots in the audience are wearing. ASPA is the Mexican national pilots’ union. Last I read they were coordinating a boycott with ALPA of the owner of Mexicana who essentially looted the airline, Icahn style.

Here’s a tip for all you former Mexicana gals: If you’re looking for work, we’d love to have you all up here! Wow!

Signed,

Every airline pilot in the USA

Honolulu Layover (Flight of the Phoenix!)

This was shot at Makapu Point on the east side of Oahu. Doin’ some speed runs, I snapped the wing on my Ventus (Dougie Fresh ran outta camera space just seconds before). Model was easily doin in excess of 80mph, the wind was blowing about 30. Anyway, as the video shows, have packing tape will travel and we sent the model to its final reward with panache. Thanks to Dougie and Van and Van’s sons for comin’ out for the shoot.

2011 Arizona Jet Rally

Geoff Burke, Mike Neff, & Clay Balser

With the legendary Colonel Bob Thacker

Here are some pics from the 23rd Annual Arizona Jet Rally in Mesa, Arizona. These were taken on Friday with Geoff Burke and Clay Balser. I was particularly thrilled to get a shot with Colonel Robert Thacker, a full scale and aeromodeling legend. When I was a kid, it seemed that every other of my Dad’s back issues of “Model Builder” had a feature article on a project Col. Thacker was involved in. To read more, click here-
